Telangana ranks #5 in Export Preparedness Index 2021 under Landlocked states category

2nd highest contributor to India's IT exports

Telangana's capital, Hyderabad, is a major IT hub of the country. The state also contributes nearly one-third to India’s production and one-fifth to its exports in the pharmaceutical sector. The state has a road network of over 27,600 km, with 24 national highways (NH) and an international airport in Hyderabad that connects it with major domestic and international markets. The state has an installed power capacity of over 15,800 MW, with about 42% contribution from green energy sources.

  • Hyderabad ranked 2nd most dynamic city in JLL’s City Momentum Index (CMI) 2019 unveiled in World Economic Forum.
  • As a pharma and life sciences hub, Hyderabad is poised to grow to a $100 bn business generator by 2030, up from $13 bn now.

The state is one of the leading producers and exporters of horticulture crops, including lemons, oranges, and turmeric among others. Sericulture and fisheries are other sustainable sectors, with the state having the third largest pool of inland fisheries resources in the country. The state has a large number of manufacturing units in pharmaceuticals, food processing, non-metallic minerals, plastics and electrical equipment sectors. The world's largest film studio complex, Ramoji Film City, is also based out of Hyderabad. The resilience of Telangana economy was aided by agriculture and allied sectors, which grew by 20.9%, dwarfing the 3% growth at the national level.

Telangana State Industrial Project Approval and Self-certification System (TS-iPASS) Act in 2014 to provide clearances to mega projects within 15 days and projects of other nature within 30 days, i.e., shortest in the country. The state is also the only one in the country to have introduced the 'Right to Clearance' for industrialists to get industrial clearances. TS- iPASS has facilitated cumulative investments of over INR 2,14,951 Crores creating 15.6 lakh jobs. In FY 2020-21, TSIIC has developed 10 new Industrial Parks and allotted 810 acres of land to 453 industries with an expected investment of INR 6,023 Crores and potential employment of 7,623.

Telangana boasted a phenomenal growth in the IT/ITeS sector with an increase of 26.14 per cent in exports at INR 1,83,569 cr compared to INR 1,45,522 cr over the previous year, as per state government report.

The employment in the IT/ITeS sector has also increased by 23.78 per cent to reach 7,78,121 during the 2021-2022 period adding 1,49,506 new jobs

Granite, coal, limestone, bauxite and mica are the major mineral resources in Telangana.

Much of the mineral wealth of the state like granite, quartz and silica-sand is exported in raw form. State coal deposits account for 20% share in India’s coal deposits. The mining industry in the state grew at 17% in 2016-17.

Hyderabad district in Telangana contributes over 30% of the pharmaceutical production of the country and accounts for 44% share in the total exports of the state.

Genome Valley, the largest R&D cluster in India, is gaining traction as the “Vaccine Capital of the world”. 4 out of 5 leading vaccine manufacturers in India are already in Genome Valley. Biopharma Hub (B-Hub) is a flagship initiative for Genome Valley wherein the state is partnering with Cytiva to strengthen the Biopharma industry in the state by setting up a Biopharma scale-up facility.

One of the first RT-PCR Kits approved by ICMR was developed in India from Hyderabad. The first indigenously developed vaccine for Covid-19 is the result of the intense efforts of Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech.

Telangana is home to about 49,112 power looms and 627 weavers cooperative societies.

The state has more than 120,000 handloom weavers in all and will be home to India’s largest textile park, which is coming up in Warangal. Telangana is also planning to establish 9 leather parks across the state. 

The Government exempted three years lock-in period in Nethannaku Cheyutha scheme and allowed weavers to draw the accumulated amounts available as of 30 June 2020 to overcome Covid hardships.

Welspun’s 2nd investment foundation stone laid for an advanced textiles project with an investment of INR 415 Cr.

Telangana ranks 2nd in terms of solar power capacity per unit area of land mass

Telangana has a vast solar potential estimated at 20.41 GW and a wind energy potential of 4.2 GW. Moreover, Telangana has a total installed capacity of 4+GW renewable energy power, including solar energy at 3,621 MW and wind energy of 128 MW besides contribution from other renewable energy sources.

Telangana ranks #1 for production of turmeric and sweet orange.

Food processing industry in Telangana processes ~25% agri & allied output by value and adds 12.5% in value. State is blessed with a rich agri-food raw material base. Moreover, there are ~40,000 registered units worth $32.75 bn in Telangana.

Two new TSIIC food processing parks launched this year are nearly fully occupied generating a total fixed capital investment of INR 1,500 crores.

Telangana Electric Vehicle and Energy storage Policy 2020-30 launched in October 2020

Investment MoUs signed with Mytrah Energy, Olectra, ETO Motors, Pure EV, Gayam Motors, Etrio, and ARAI.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced an investment of INR 1110 cr. to set up Global Digital Hub in Hyderabad, largest outside US, Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

Telangana has also been on the forefront of promoting the use and development of new-age technologies like AI, ML, drones and blockchain.

  • Telangana became the first State to launch an actionable policy framework for Artificial Intelligence. The Telangana AI Mission (T-AIM) has been formed in partnership with NASSCOM to execute the strategy
  • Cloud adoption has been mandated within the government and an easy to adopt framework has been released to support the same
  • Agritech has been given a push through the initiatives of AI-based Pest Management, AI4AI – in partnership with WEF, and the National e-Governance Plan for Agriculture
  • Through Medicine from The Sky (MFTS), Telangana became the 1st state to pilot Beyond Visual Range of Sight (BVLOS) drone delivery of vaccines and essentials.
  • The state has adopted solutions like RTDAI to incorporate the use of technology for efficient delivery of services and e-governance. Several such new-age technology-based e-governance solutions are being worked upon every day.
