Naga chilli, one of the world's spiciest chillis, is grown in the state

Nagaland is predominantly an agrarian economy with 71% of its population dependent on agriculture. Major horticulture crops grown in the state include banana, citrus, pineapple and potato.

Other cash crops grown in the state include rattan and bamboo. The state is classified into four agro-climatic zones and the annual rainfall averages between 1,800 and 2,500 mm. Among all the natural resources, forest resources such as medicinal plants and timber contribute maximum to the state’s economy. It also has 650 indigenous species of medicinal and aromatic plants; and an unexploited reserves of around 600 MMT of Crude Oil.

Nagaland shares its international border with Myanmar in the east and is landlocked by Indian states on the other sides. Business opportunities in Nagaland are plenty as the state is well connected with the rest of India through a National Highway road network of 1,550 km and an airport in Dimapur and National Highway 19, which passes through the State from Dimapur via Kohima to Manipur. This NH 39 is soon to be an international route under the Look East Policy of the Government of India. 

Hornbill Festival of Nagaland, celebrated each year to promote the state's cultural heritage, attracts a flock of domestic and foreign tourists, thereby providing ample opportunities for various industries in Nagaland to flourish. The event takes place in the first week of December, showcasing traditional Naga Morungs exhibition, state cuisines, herbal medicines, flower shows, songs and dances.

  • About 79% of the state's total cultivable area is under horticulture plantation. 
  • Kiwi is one of the major horticultural crops of Nagaland and is grown in an area of 500 Ha. The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, expressed that Nagaland has enough potential to become “Kiwi State of India”.

Nagaland has the potential to produce 10,000 MT of honey and 10 MT of wax

The Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission has the vision to produce 4 Lakh bee colonies scientifically. If the state can achieve this vision, it would be able to earn around 100 Cr.

Nagaland has more than 1,000 MT of high chemical grade limestone reserves in the eastern region and 600 MMT of crude oil

There are more than 20 MT of hydrocarbon reserves underneath 7 oil belts, spread across 5 districts of Nagaland.

Sericulture in Nagaland

Sericulture

Mulberry, Muga, Eri and Oak-Tasar silk are widely cultivated in Nagaland

  • Raw silk production in the state stood at 380.10 MT in 2023-24, which is nearly 25.24% higher than that in 2022-23.
  • The government of India is promoting the sericulture sector in the North-East through various initiatives such as its North Eastern Region Textiles Promotion Scheme (NERTPS). Under this scheme, fabric processing in Nagaland has is promoted. During scheme implementation, 400 women stakeholders have been trained in the art of silk reeling and weaving.
