The northeastern states of the country have been the highlight of several development debates in the country over the past few years. The region has received immense policy support to enhance infrastructure, connectivity and logistics. In accordance with this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the launch of a new scheme ‘PM Development Initiative for North East.' The initial allocation for the scheme is INR 1,500 crore to be administered through the North Eastern Council.

The primary focus of the plan is to develop robust infrastructure in the region to create livelihood opportunities for women and youth along with providing for other development needs of the region.

The plan doesn’t aim to replace the existing Centre and state schemes but would be carried out in alignment with the PM Gati Shakti plan and other existing needs and requirements of the region.
