India is the largest producer of Milk and Buffalo Meat

India has a vast resource of livestock and poultry, which plays a vital role in improving the socio-economic conditions of rural masses. There are about 303.76 Mn bovines (cattle, buffalo, mithun and yak), 74.26 Mn sheep, 148.88 Mn goats, 9.06 Mn pigs and about 851.81 Mn poultry as per 20th Livestock Census in the country. 

In the current scenario, India is the largest producer of Milk and Buffalo Meat, the 2nd largest producer of Goat meat, 3rd in Egg production and the 8th largest in overall Meat Production in the world.

The livestock sector grew at a compound annual growth rate of 13.36% from 2014-15 to 2021-22. 

Export of poultry products in the fiscal year 2022-23 touched notable 664,753.46 Metric Tonnes with a total worth of $134.04 Mn to over 57 countries. 

India's exports of Animal Products in 2022-23 was $4,062.15 Mn which include the major products like Buffalo Meat ($3194.70 Mn), Sheep/ Goat Meat ($66.92 Mn), Other Meat ($2.18 Mn), Poultry Products ($134.04 Mn), Dairy Products ($284.65 Mn), Animal Casing ($40.87 Mn), Processed Meat ($1.47 Mn), Casein ($101.19 Mn), Albumin Eggs & Milk ($33.06 Mn), and Natural Honey ($203.07 Mn).

Buffalo meat dominated the exports with a contribution of over 78.65% in total Animal Products export from India in 2022-23.

Poultry

The total egg production in the country is 138.38 Bn in numbers in the year 2022-23. The per-capita availability of egg is 101 eggs per annum. The egg production has increased by 7.35% over the last 9 years.  The top 5 egg producing States are Andhra Pradesh (20.41%), Tamil Nadu (16.08%), Telangana (12.86%), West Bengal (8.84%), Karnataka (6.38%) Together, they contribute 64.56% of total egg production in the country. 

Meat

India ranks 8th in the world in terms of total meat production. The total meat production in the country is 9.77 MT in the year 2022-23. The meat production has increased by 5.62% as compared to 2020-21. The per capita availability reached 6.82 Kg/annum for the year 2021-22 from 6.52 Kg/annum in the year 2020-21. Nearly 51.44% of meat production is contributed by Poultry whereas Buffalo, Goat, Sheep, Pig, and Cattle contribute nearly 17.49%, 13.63%, 10.33%, 3.93% and 3.18% of meat production respectively to the total meat production of the country. The top 5 meat producing States are Maharashtra (12.25%), Uttar Pradesh (12.14%), West Bengal (11.63%), Andhra Pradesh (11.04%) and Telangana (10.82%). Together, they contribute 57.86% of total meat production in the country.

Animal Feed

The Indian animal feed market grew at 3.5% CAGR over last 5 years, to reach the size of approx. $11.66 Bn. There is an expectation that it'll reach ~$19.23 Bn by 2028 exhibiting a CAGR of 8.2%. India has established strong markets for Cattle and Poultry feeds. Both are growing at 15% and 8-9% respectively have grounds for huge potential in future. Cattle feed mainly comprises grains (like jowar, millets etc.) and their cakes, mustard, cotton seeds and their oil cakes, de-oiled rice and soyabean. On the other hand, poultry is mainly fed maize, jowar, wheat, soy and their concentrates.

    What is the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF)?

    The Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund was recently announced as a part of Prime Minister’s Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan stimulus package with an outlay of $ 2.1 billion. It has been approved for incentivizing investments to establish dairy processing, meat processing, animal feed plant and value addition infrastructure.

    What are the financial incentives available to eligible beneficiaries under the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF)?

    The Government of India will provide a 3% interest subvention to eligible beneficiaries. There will be a 2 years moratorium period for the principal loan amount and 6 years repayment period thereafter. Additionally, projects will be a eligible for a loan up to 90% of the cost of the project. Moreover, a credit guarantee fund of $ 107 million has been set up to provide guarantees for viable projects.

    What will happen when the repayment period exceeds eight years repayment period?

    The interest subvention will be provided only up to 8 years of repayment period. Beyond no interest subvention will be provided.

     What is National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP)?        

    National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) is a flagship scheme launched by Hon'ble Prime Minister in September, 2019 for control of Foot & Mouth Disease and Brucellosis by vaccinating 100% cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat and pig population for FMD and 100% bovine female calves of 4-8 months of age for brucellosis with the total outlay of $ 1.9 billion for five years (2019-20 to 2023-24)
