Meghalaya has a hydroelectric power potential of approximately 3,000 MW. About 9% of the country's total limestone reserves are distributed in the state.

Meghalaya, located in North-East India, shares its border with Assam and Bangladesh.

The picturesque state receives the highest rainfall in the country, hosts an array of national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, medicinal plants, and more. Meghalaya has 2 national parks and 4 wildlife sanctuaries. It offers many adventure tourism opportunities like mountaineering, rock climbing, water sports, hiking, and trekking, among others. Mawsynram, located in East Khasi Hills, is the wettest place in the world.

Meghalaya State Investment Promotion Board (MSIPB), Government of Meghalaya has signed an MoU with Invest India in July 2021. In accordance with the MoU, Meghalaya Desk at Invest India has been operationalised to leverage investment opportunities in the key thrust sectors, boosting trade and investment in Meghalaya

  • The desk in collaboration with Meghalaya State Investment Promotion Board and PRIME Meghalaya, organized a Conference on CSR, Entrepreneurship & Sustainability as a part of Chief Minister’s Startup & CSR Week in Shillong from 14th to 16th November 2022.  

  • The desk organized Meghalaya State Roundtable as part of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region’s (MDoNER) Northeast Global Investor Summit (NEGIS) on 17th May 2023 at the State Convention Centre, Shillong. The sessions included Investment Readiness Workshop for Government Officials, Inaugural Session for the Roundtable and a B2G session for one-to-one interaction between the investors and government officials. The aim was to showcase the investment potential and opportunities available in Meghalaya across sectors such as tourism, agriculture, textiles, sports, IT, education, and more.

Meghalaya has a total installed power generation capacity of 651 MW in 2023

The total potential for hydropower is estimated to be approximately 3,000 MW. 

As per Ministry of Power, Central Electricity Authority, Meghalaya's total installed power generation capacity includes 109.69 MW is thermal power (gas) and 490.4 MW is renewable power (417.38 MW hydropower).

Meghalaya has 76% forest land, certainly above the Indian average of only 25%, whereas the net sown area is 9%

83% of Meghalaya’s net area sown is devoted to crop production. The area under cultivable wasteland is quite high (20%). Meghalaya holds a strong position in terms of per capita availability of livestock products compared not only to the NER but also to India. 

There are 25 FPOs registered in the state. 325 startups are registered under PRIME Meghalaya under Agriculture & food processing sector, the highest number amongst all the sectors. Lakadong turmeric and GI tagged Khasi Mandarin have huge potential for export to international markets.

Meghalaya has a great industrial potential. The production of coal is spread over in Jaintia hills, Garo Hills, East Khasi hills and West Khasi hills areas.

Mawmluh Cave in Sohra, Meghalaya, was selected by the International Union of Geological Sciences – IUGS (UNESCO) as one of the ‘FIRST 100 IUGS GEOLOGICAL SITES’ in the world

Meghalaya is home to exquisite tourist destinations like the Living Root Bridge, a world heritage site, two National Parks (Balpakram and Nokrek), Mawlynnong, the cleanest village in Asia, Siju Wildlife Sanctuary in South Garo Hills, Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary in Ri Bhoi District, and many more.  The state is home to Nongkhnum Island, Meghalaya’s largest and Asia’s second largest river island.

Meghalaya is gradually becoming one of the most popular tourist hubs in the country, owing to its improved connectivity, recent inauguration of the state's first five-star hotel, and growing interest in adventure and eco tourism, coupled with year-round festivals. The state offers many adventure tourism opportunities like mountaineering, rock climbing, water sports, hiking, trekking, among others.

Meghalaya's Living Root Bridges has been included in the UNESCO world heritage site tentative list.
Tourism department launched the ‘Meghalaya Homestay Scheme’. Under this scheme, the Tourism department would allocate up to INR 10 Lakh for promoting homestays in the state. In order to encourage people of the state to operate homestays as a source of livelihood, the subsidy and loans would be extended. Under this scheme, a 35 % front-end subsidy would be given to those who wish to start homestays. Up to 70% of the financing would be done for the rural areas.

Meghalaya produces 3 out of the 4 varieties of silk available in the world – Eri; locally known as Ryndia, Muga, and Mulberry

Sericulture and Weaving in Meghalaya are the two most important cottage based, eco-friendly industries in the rural areas portraying the cultural ethos and rich heritage of the people of the State. 

In Meghalaya, around 16,000 families are involved in sericulture farming and 42,774 people are associated with the handloom sector, of which about 70% are women creating further avenues for women empowerment in the state.
Training facilities are being provided to handloom weavers in clusters under the scheme of Silk Weaving Technology Programme. The Government has introduced the State Award for Handicraft Artisans to recognize the outstanding achievements of the master craftsmen and their innovative contribution to the field of handicraft.

The approximate number of farmers producing cocoons in Meghalaya is 48,685. The state has 10 Weaving Training Centres, 10 Production Centres, and 15 Common Facility Centres. There is Integrated Scheme for Development of Eri Silk Industry under Aspirational District at Ri Bhoi, where assistance is provided to farmers for raising of plantations, construction of rearing house and establishment of cocoon bank.

Meghalaya is also set to host the National Games in 2024

The 2nd North-East Olympic Games were organised in Meghalaya in 2022, where 3000 Athletes from across the North Eastern states participated in 18 sporting disciplines.  The organisation of the event was commended by national media and lauded as a remarkable feat.
 
The DSYA in association with the MSOA and the SSA’s organised the 83rd Senior Table-Tennis National Championships, International Kayaking Festival, International Sohra Half Marathon, International Paragliding Festival etc.

Some of the existing infrastructures include: J.N Stadium, Shillong, P.A Sangma Sports Complex, Tura, Chandmari Turf, Tura, SAI Complex (Indoor Hall, Athletics Track, Archery Ground,Football Turf), NEHU Complex (Indoor Stadium, Community Hall), NEIGRIHMS Indoor Stadium, Assam Regimental Centre (Shooting), Crinoline Swimming Pool Complex, Mawlai-Mawroh Court (Basketball), Shillong Tennis Club, Shillong Golf Course (Golf Links)

Some of the upcoming infrastructures include P.A. Sangma football stadium, which will be extended to form the P.A. Sangma Sports Complex including two indoor halls to facilitate badminton, squash, swimming, table-tennis, and basketball. The track and field stadium at Adokgre and the indoor stadium at Sunny Hill, West Garo Hills are under construction and will be inaugurated soon. The J.N. Stadium, Shillong is being upgraded with a new Indoor Facility being made within the complex. The complete complex will boast world class features in line with the international sport competition protocols. Over 300 grassroot sports infrastructure projects are presently underway across the state.

The total tele-density of Meghalaya is 74 Mn

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) 2022, Meghalaya had 2.45 Mn total subscriber base (wireline + wireless), and out of which 1.44 Mn is rural and 1.01 Mn is urban. The total tele-density of Meghalaya is 74 Mn, and out of which 54 Mn is rural and 148 Mn is urban.
