In the current scenario, India is the largest producer of milk and buffalo meat, 2nd largest producer of Goat meat, 3rd in Egg production and 8th in Meat Production in the world.
The livestock sector grew at a compound annual growth rate of 7.9 %t during 2014-15 to 2020- 21. The contribution to total agriculture GVA (at constant prices) has increased from 24.3 % in 2014-15 to 30.1 % in 2020-21.
Export of poultry products increased by 91.70% in nine months of FY 2022-23 as its export increased from
nbsp;50 Mn to $95 Mn.
Poultry
The total egg production in the country is 129.60 bn in numbers in the year 2021-22. The per-capita availability of egg is 95 eggs per annum. The egg production has increased by 6.19% as compared to 2020-21. The top 5 egg producing States are Andhra Pradesh (20.41%), Tamil Nadu (16.08%), Telangana (12.86%), West Bengal (8.84%), Karnataka (6.38%) They together contribute 64.56% of total egg production in the country.
Meat
India ranks 8th in the world in terms of total meat production. The total meat production in the country is 9.29 mn tonnes in the year 2021-22. The meat production has increased by 5.62% as compared to 2020-21. The meat production from poultry is 4.78 mn tonnes, contributing about 51.44% of total meat production. The per capita availability reached at 6.82 Kg/annum the year 2021-22 from 6.52 Kg/annum of the previous year 2020-21. Nearly 51.44% of meat production is contributed by Poultry whereas Buffalo, Goat, Sheep, Pig, and Cattle contributes nearly 17.49%, 13.63%, 10.33%, 3.93% and 3.18% of meat production respectively to the total meat production of the country. The top 5 meat producing States are Maharashtra (12.25%), Uttar Pradesh (12.14%), West Bengal (11.63%), Andhra Pradesh (11.04%) and Telangana (10.82%). They together contribute 57.86% of total meat production in the country.
Animal Feed
The Indian animal feed market grew at 3.5% CAGR over last 5 years. Whereas, compound cattle feed has a market potential of $400 - 650 Mn with 16% growth over the next 5 years with major growth drivers being low organic feed market, penetration, increasing formal offtake, etc.
Breed Improvement
The Indian animal healthcare industry accounts for 2.5% of global animal healthcare industry and is expected to grow @6% CAGR. Animal Vaccines comprise 17% ($170 Mn) of the overall Animal Healthcare industry in India, which stands at $950 Mn.
